Materials

two colors of tissue paper (pink, purple, or red)

plastic container or bowl

clear contact paper, cut into pairs of same-size squares

scissors

hole punch and ribbon (optional)

Instructions

* Valentine's Day is February 14th.
1. Ask the children to tear tissue paper into small pieces (approximately 1"
to 3"). Place them in a plastic container.
2. Give each child two squares of clear contact paper. Let them peel the
backing from one square of contact paper and place on a table, stickyside
up, saving the other square for later use. (Younger children might
need help taking the backing off.)
3. Encourage them to place the small pieces of tissue paper flat on the
contact paper.
4. When the squares are covered in tissue papers, have the children remove
the backing from the reserved contact paper. Help them place it stickyside
down, on top of the tissue-covered square. Encourage them to
smooth out any air bubbles.
5. Show them how to fold the square gently in half and cut half a heart,
starting in the fold of the paper (to make an evenly shaped heart).
Younger children may need extra help with this step.
6. Children unfold the heart to find a beautiful Valentine! Encourage them
to give it to someone special on Valentine's Day.
7. If desired, let them punch a hole in the tops of their hearts and thread
ribbon through. They can hang their hearts on doorknobs, windows, or
anywhere for a pretty Valentine decoration.
