1. Pick a short activity that you can time. For example, tell the children you are
going to see how long it takes to pass out napkins at snack time.
2. Count out loud. The children count along: one second, two seconds, three
seconds, four seconds, five seconds, and so on.
3. Stop counting when the
children have passed out all
the napkins.
4. Each day choose a different
child to pass out napkins.
5. Make a chart and record the
time it takes to complete the
task each day.
6. Select a different activity to
time. Choose an activity that
takes longer to complete.

* To vary the activity, try hourglass timers and kitchen timers. You can even see
if an activity can be completed within a period of time.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
* Can the children repeat numbers after you model saying them?
* Can the children to count from 1 to 10?
