assortment of balls (footballs, crumbled paper balls, sponge balls, rubber balls,sock balls, and playground balls)measuring tapeplastic traffic cones
Instructions
1. Take the children outdoors for this activity.
2. Put the assortment of balls along a start line.
3. On the command of go, invite the class to pick up the balls and throw themas far as possible, all in the same direction.
4. Invite several children to help you measure the distance from the start line towhere the farthest ball landed.
5. Mark the place where the farthest ball landed with a cone. Challenge childrento get a ball to go farther than the cone during the next round of play.
6. Then measure the distance from the start line to where the closest balllanded.
7. Ask the children to think about why some balls will go farther than others.Explain that a variety of things affect how far the ball will go, such as theweight and shape of the ball, the experience of the thrower, and so on).
8. Ask the children to gather up all the balls.
9. Repeat the activity several times.More to do Language and Literacy: Display numbers, letters, or sight word cardsrandomly around the "throwing area." Invite the children to identify the letter,number, or word nearest to where their ball landed.
