1. Collect colored pictures of nouns that go together: raindrops and
umbrella, witch and witch's hat, car and child safety seat, horse and
saddle, stars and moon, table and chair, cup and saucer, right mitten and
left mitten, money and cash register, school bus and school, paper and
pencil, pumpkin and jack-o-lantern, and so on.
2. Print out the desired number of computer-generated pumpkins onto
tagboard.
3. Flip the image so that the stem of the pumpkin points in opposite
directions.
4. Print out the same number as before onto tagboard.
5. Cut both sets of pumpkins into cards of the desired size using a paper
cutter.
6. Glue one picture from the set of go-together pictures onto the first set of
pumpkins and the other picture from the set onto the second set of
pumpkins. Laminate the cards for durability.
7. At circle time, pass out all the pumpkins with stems going one direction.
8. Place the pumpkins with stems going the other direction in the pocket
chart, leaving room between them.
9. Encourage each child, in turn, to place his pumpkin next to the correct
pumpkin to make pairs of things that go together. If a pocket chart is not
available, this activity can be done on a learning mat on the floor or put
in a center for table use.
