Instructions
1. Talk with the children about the shapes of a variety of
objects in the room.
2. Name a shape and challenge the children to identify
various objects that match that shape.
3. Teach the children the following song:
The Shape Song by Jackie Wright
(Tune: "Mary Had a Little Lamb")
I like squares I like squares,
Yes, I do, Yes, I do,
Yes, I do, A napkin is a square.
Yes, I do.
4. Challenge the children to think of examples of each
shape to make up new verses.
5. Repeat the song, naming other shapes, and
challenging the children to think up different examples
for each shape.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Can the children recognize different shapes around
them?
l Can each child wait her turn and participate properly
in the organized activity?
l Can the children talk and listen in a large group?
l Can the children effectively participate in the singing
activity?
