Store props

scissors

variety of paper to cut (different sizes, colors, and textures)

variety of material to cut (sheets of aluminum foil, waxed paper, yarn,

fabric, and so on)

pretend dollars and coins

paper lunch bags, optional

Instructions

1. Set up an area in your room to be a pretend store.
2. Stock the shelves with scissors and cutting material.
3. Give each child two pretend coins to use for shopping.
4. One at a time, each child purchases scissors and something to cut with their
two coins. Depending on the children's abilities, either an adult or a child
can be the sales clerk.
5. Children return to their spots (on the floor or at the table) to cut.
6. Consider giving children more coins to shop for more materials to cut.
7. If desired, give the children paper lunch bags to bring home their cuttings.
8. Any undesired scraps either go in the trash or recycling a great sorting
activity!
