Favorite puppet, bought or handmade

Instructions

1. Make a "Star of the Week" bag. Put a stuffed animal, a book, a baby blanket,
and a blank journal into a canvas bag or backpack.
2. Introduce the Star of the Week bag to the children and explain that everyone
will have a turn to bring the stuffed animal home with them. Explain that the
bear has a blanket, a favorite book, and a diary. Not only do the children
need to take care of the bear, but they also they need to have their parents
help write down the animal's adventure for the week that the animal is with
them.
3. Create a spot to hang the Star of the Week information each week. If desired,
ask the Star of the Week to bring in a photo from home. Questions to ask the
Star of the Week:
* What is your favorite color? ______
* Who are your friends?__________
* What is your favorite thing to do at school?____________
* What is your favorite food?___________
* What don't you like?______________
* What is your favorite book?______________
4. Make a certificate that says:
________ is our star of the week
This entitles ____ to have our mascot spend the week with him/her. Please read
our mascot his/her favorite story and make sure you write in his/her diary and tell
us of your adventures.
5. Write a letter to the parents informing them of the importance of the hometo-
school connection with literacy.
