Materials

The Mitten by Jan Brettphotographs of the types of animals that climb into the mitten

Instructions

1. Before reading the story, ask the children to guess how many animals they think can fit in a mitten.

2. Pass out the animal pictures to eight of the children.

3. Read The Mitten to the children. As you read, have the children holding the correct animals stand up with their pictures when their animals are introduced (the mole, snowshoe rabbit, hedgehog, owl, badger, fox, bear, and meadow mouse).

4. At the end of the story, ask the children if they know how many animals fit inside the mitten. Count the children holding the pictures of the animals.

5. Remind the children who didn't get a turn to stand that they will have a turn with another story.
