Instructions

l With chalk or washable paint, draw two very large and long snakes, at least
12" wide, which resemble winding paths from the head to the tail of the
snake.
l Inside one snake, draw the four basic shapes about 10" in diameter and
about 5" apart, until you fill the snake. Leave the second snake's shape blank.
What to Do
1. Ask the children to start at the head of the snake and walk along the path of
the outlined snake, identifying the shapes as they step from one to the other.
2. Start with the four basic shapes and then add different shapes later.
3. Challenge the children to identify the number of sides each shape has as they
step from shape to shape within the snake.
4. After the children are familiar with the process of the activity, give the children
pieces of chalk and challenge the each child to draw a specific shape within
the second snake. Help the children as necessary.
5. When the children finish filling in the second shape snake, invite them to walk
through it, as they did the first snake.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Can the child identify the shapes within the first snake?
l Can the child copy the appropriate shape inside the second snake?
