Instructions

* Print "Earth-Day Pledge" on poster board.
What to Do
1. On Earth Day or any other day, read It's Earth Day! by Mercer Mayer to the
children. Pause occasionally throughout the book to discuss different ideas
with the children.
2. Continue discussing with the children ways to care for the Earth. Ask the
children if the story gave them any ideas about new ways to care for the Earth.
3. Set out the poster board with the following pledge, along with the paint, paint
pan, and paper towels.
Earth-Day Pledge by Kathryn Hake
Our handprints show how much we care.
We want clean water and fresh air.
So we will help protect the Earth,
Showing others its great worth.
4. Pour a small amount of the paint into the paint pan, and invite the children to
take turns putting their handprints on the poster. Note: Be sure to observe
carefully, and have the children wash their hands immediately after making
their handprints.
5. When the paint dries, set the pledge poster on the wall as a reminder to the
children.
Assessment
Consider the following:
* Do the children have an understanding of what Earth Day is, and why it is
important?
* Do the children understand the importance of the pledge?
