Instructions

1. Make butterfly wings for each child. Cut out large bowtie shapes and let the children decorate them with adhesive circles. Safety pin the butterfly wings to the children's backs. For this activity, you will only need to make two pairs of wings, but it's fun for each child to make his own wings to keep.

2. Make three ladybug vests. Cut off the bottoms of three grocery bags, cut openings on each side of the bags for arm holes, and cut the front of the bag through the middle. Paint the bag red and let it dry. Attach adhesive black circles when dry.

3. Choose 10 children to be the "bugs." One child should wear a yellow and black smock or shirt, if available. Two children should wear butterfly wings, three children should wear the ladybug vests, and the remaining four children should be wearing sneakers.

4. Invite the children to recite the following rhyme as the 10 bugs stand in front of the class and act out their insect characters when mentioned. Let the children take turns acting out different bugs.In my garden, 'round the treeDanced one bumblebee. And two large butterfliesWearing polka-dotted ties. The three ladybugs looked their bestEach in a red velvet vest. While the four caterpillars were real neatWearing sneakers on their feet. How many bugs are there then? You're right, if you count ten!
