* October is International Dinosaur Month.
1. After a few days of learning about dinosaurs, play this fun action game.
Tell the children they are going to play this game like "The Farmer in the
Dell" but instead of being the farmer, the wife, and so on, they will all
pretend to be dinosaurs.
2. Have the children form a large circle while holding hands.
3. Choose a child to be the first dinosaur and have him stand in the middle
of the circle. Ask the child to state what dinosaur he would like to be.
4. The rest of the children walk around in a circle around the child while
singing (use the dinosaur name the child chooses):
The Stegosaurus in the dell,
The Stegosaurus in the dell,
Hi-ho the derry-oh,
The Stegosaurus in the dell.
5. The "Stegosaurus" chooses a friend to join him in the middle of circle
while the rest sing:
The Stegosaurus finds a friend,
The Stegosaurus finds a friend,
Hi-ho the derry-oh,
The Stegosaurus finds a friend.
6. The friend states what dinosaur she would like to be. The children sing
(use the dinosaur name the child chooses):
The Brachiosaurus in the dell,
The Brachiosaurus in the dell,
Hi-ho the derry-oh,
The Brachiosaurus in the dell.
7. Repeat until all the children have had a turn and you are the only one
left to circle the others as everyone sings. For the last verse, sing:
The dinosaurs in the dell,
The dinosaurs in the dell,
Hi-ho the derry-oh,
The dinosaurs in the dell.
Art: Using paper plates, have the children design and make dinosaur masks
they can wear while they play. Provide markers, crayons, and other art
supplies for children to create cool, funny, or scary masks. Cut eye holes for
the children and attach a length of narrow elastic to the masks. For those
who don't like wearing a masks, create a pendant in the same manner and
hang it on the child's neck with heavy yarn.
