20 pieces of 9" square pieces of tagboard
scissors (adult only)Instructions
l Cut the 20 pieces of tagboard into five sets of shapes, with each set having
one circle, triangle, square, and oval.
What to Do
1. Give each child one of the 9" shapes.
2. Teach the children the following song:
Shapes Are All Around Us by Susan Oldham Hill
(Tune: "The Farmer in the Dell")
The triangle takes a square,
The triangle takes a square.
Shapes are all around us now,
The triangle takes a square.
The square takes a circle,
The square takes a circle.
Shapes are all around us now,
The square takes a circle.
The circle takes an oval,
The circle takes an oval.
Shapes are all around us now,
The circle takes an oval.
3. Choose one child holding a triangle to start. As the others sing, the "triangle"
child chooses a friend holding a square shape.
4. Next, on the second verse, the child holding the square chooses a friend with a
circle shape. Continue with verse three.
5. Start over with verse one, until all the shapes have been chosen.
Teacher - to - Teacher Tip
l This can easily be extended by adding verses for star, heart, and diamond
shapes.
