Instructions
1. Send a letter home informing parents that the children will be learning about
the ocean.
2. Ask parents to send in pictures (photographs or magazine) or beach items for
their child to show and share with the rest of the children.
3. When the children bring in their items from home, encourage them to share
them with the class.
4. Read books about the ocean with the children. Have a discussion about the
ocean.
5. Provide beach materials (see above) and a plastic pool with sand (put a sheet
or plastic underneath) and encourage the children to explore, pretend, and
create as they learn about the ocean.

Art: Provide children with glue, colored sand, small shells, and paper to make
beach collages.
Music: Play island music and whale sounds during free play.
Water Play: Fill a water table with water, boats, and plastic ocean animals.
