Materials
Birthday bag and contents (see below)
Instructions
1. Display a poster of the alphabet in upper and lowercase letters.
2. Make a journal for each child by stapling a few pieces of paper together.
3. Glue each child's photo on the inside cover of his journal.
4. Provide children with pencils, markers, stamps, junk mail, and so on.
Encourage them to write or draw in their journals. (For some children, this is
a good way to let their parents leave while they are busy writing and drawing
in their journal.)
More to do
Write the daily snack menu on a blackboard and read it aloud at group time.
Blocks: Put paper, pencils, and masking tape in hanging baskets in the Block
Center. Encourage the children to make signs, draw designs, or tell who built the
structure. Use adding machine tape rolls to make maps, signs, take messages, or
as note paper.
Dramatic Play: Make paper and pencils available to take orders, write up bills,
and so on. Hang a tablet of paper and a pencil on a string so children can write
messages.
