Instructions
* Create an obstacle course in the classroom using the materials listed to the
left. Label a "start" and a "finish."
What to Do
1. Invite the children to observe the obstacle course you set up.
2. Encourage the children to comment on the materials you have in the obstacle
course and what each item was previously used for. Ask the children to use
these sentences as they share their comments.
This _____ used to be for _____.
Now it______.
3. Draw the children's attention to the end of the obstacle course. Explain that
after the children move through the course they are to select one item from
the collection of recyclables and place it in the recycling bin.
4. Demonstrate how to move through the obstacle course moving over, under,
through, between, and so on from start to finish.
5. Invite the children to line up and do the same. Encourage the children to
move through the course several times.
6. Gather the children together and invite them to think of ways to rearrange the
reusable materials to create a new obstacle course, and then repeat the activity.
Assessment
Consider the following:
* Can the children identify the previous uses of the materials that make up the
obstacle course?
* How well do the children navigate the obstacle course?
