Instructions

1. Give each child or pair of children a piece of newsprint paper and a dark crayon or charcoal.

2. With a few minor instructions, send the children around the room or playground looking for textures to rub.

3. As the children lose interest, bring them back together for show and tell and a discussion of the different textures around us.

4. Discuss which textures make good rubbings and which ones do not.More to doMore art: Give each child a pre-drawn picture with large areas (for example, building with a roof, tree, grass, dirt, car, animals, etc.). Instruct each child to use a variety of colors and fill in each area with a texture rubbing, trying to reproduce the look of boards, ground, etc. Display the finished products.
