Materials

Ten Black Dots by Donald Crewsblack construction paperscissorspapergluecrayons or markers

Instructions

1. Cut out enough circles from black construction paper for each child to have 10.

2. Set out paper, glue, and drawing materials at the Art Station.

3. Gather the children in a circle.

4. Show the children the 10 black circles. Talk about the circles and let them know that circles can also be called dots, as they are in the story that they are about to hear.

5. Sing the following song (tune: "Little Red Wagon"):Ten Black DotsOne little, two little, three little black dots,Four little, five little six little black dots,Seven little, eight little, nine little black dots.What can we make with ten black dots!6. Read Ten Black Dots by Donald Crews. After the story, let the children make pictures using their black "dot" circles, following the examples in the story. They can choose how many dots they would like to use. Make sure they count their dots while they are working.

7. Write "_____black dots make a _____" on the children's papers as they dictate to you how many circles they chose to use and what they made with them.
