Instructions
1. Ahead of time, draw a hen and eggs as shown in the book (or use your own)
and cut them out.
2. Glue a strip of magnet to the back of each cutout so it will stick to the metal
cookie sheet or pan (a metal flannel board!).
3. Get the children's attention by clucking and gather your "chicks" into the
large group area. Cluck and scratch the ground as you sit down.
4. Put the cutouts behind your back and read the story to the children. As you
read, remove each cutout of the hen's body as you need it and reassemble
the hen on the cookie sheet. The children will see parts making a whole,
which is also math.
5. Ask the children prompting questions,
such as, "Have you ever seen an
egg?" or "What would you do
if you found an egg?"
6. Have a discussion and write
down what the children say.
Post the paper where they
can see it for a few days.
