Instructions
1. Find a simple picture of an object that relates to your theme or unit. For
example, if you are studying farms, copy a large outline of a barn, pig, cow,
tractor, and so on.
2. Enlarge and copy the picture onto construction paper.
3. Cut out the picture of the object so that there is no extra paper around the
outline.
4. Laminate it or cover it with contact paper.
5. Punch holes around the outside edge of the object. Leave about 1 cm
between the hole and the outside edge, and space the holes about ?" apart.
6. Finally, tie a shoestring to one of the holes. Then, show the children how to
lace the card. They do this by weaving the string under and over the card
until all the holes have been passed through.
More to do
This activity is easily transferred into any area of the curriculum. You can create
lacing cards to fit any subject, such as a microscope or a moon shape for science;
a ship or picture or a historical character for social studies; an apple or tooth for
health and nutrition; a guitar or music note for music; and so on.
