Instructions

What to do
1. Beforehand, cut a slit from the edge of each paper plate to the center. Also, ask the children to
bring a stuffed bear from home, if possible.
2. To make the bears' party hats, have the children decorate a paper plate with crayons or markers.
3. When they are finished, twist the plate into a cone shape and secure it with tape or staples.
4. Next, ask the children to choose whether they would like to make a dress-up collar or a bowtie
for their bear.
5. To make a collar, fold the paper plates in half and, beginning at the slit, cut a hole in the middle
of the plate.
6. Have the children decorate the collar with crayons. Let them punch some holes so the collar
appears to be made of lace.
7. To make a bow tie, follow the same steps as above, then cut out the shape of a bowtie where
the ends of the collar meet.
8. Have the children decorate the bow tie with crayons.
9. When they finish the party hats and a collar or bow tie, have the children dress their bears and
set them on picnic blankets around the room.
10. Invite the children to prepare a picnic with playdough. Show them how to roll the playdough
flat with a rolling pin and cut shapes for bread, lunchmeat, and pie crust. Have them roll balls of
dough for fruit and doughnuts or a tubular shape for pickles and cucumbers. Provide them
with play cookie cutters. Encourage them to decorate the cookies and cakes with little bits of
playdough.
11. Ask the children to serve the food to the bears on trays or plastic dishes. Play some music and
perhaps serve lunch or a treat to the children as well.
