Learn Every Day About Numbers

Materials

10 pieces of card stock (8 1/2 " x 11")

dark marker or paint

Instructions

Make number cards for numbers 1 to 10 using the card stock and a dark marker
or paint. On each piece of card stock, write one of the numbers. Each
number should fill up most of the page and be easy to read from far away.
What to Do
1. Have the children stand shoulder to shoulder in a line on one side of an
open area.
2. Stand at the other end of the open area with the number cards.
3. Taking turns, have the children request to move toward you. They should ask,
"Teacher, may I hop?" They can request to step, hop, jump, skip, and so on.
4. Reply to the child by holding up a number card, but don't read the number.
"You may hop [hold up a number card] times."
5. Have the child reply, identifying the number. "Teacher, I will hop five times."
The child takes five hops toward you.
6. Continue playing until the children reach you.
Teacher - to - Teacher Tip
* To make this activity easier for children who are not yet able to recognize
written numbers, say the number while holding up the number card. This will
help the children associate the written number with the spoken number.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
* Can each child identify and name the number?
* Can each child count to the specified number?
* Can each child perform the specified task?
