Instructions
1. Ask the children if they have ever been to a zoo. Explain that there are many
different animals at the zoo that make different sounds.
2. Show the children the cover of the book, and read the title, author, and illustrator.
Ask the children if they can guess some other zoo animals that might
be mentioned in the book.
3. As you read each page, encourage the children to make the animal noises
with you. They can roar like a lion, snort like a hippo, hiss like a boa
constrictor, and so on.
4. At the end of the story, the zookeeper hears ten animals in the book. Assign
animal roles to the children, and ask them to make their individual sounds all
at the same time. No wonder the zookeeper heard them all!
Art: Paint large sheets of paper in animal colors, such as black and white for a
zebra, yellow and brown for a tiger, and pink and white for a flamingo. After the
pages dry, cut them into animal shapes. Glue the shapes to a large sheet of paper
and add details to the animal collage using crayons or markers.
Listening Center: Animal sounds can come alive in your listening center! Ask
each child to select a favorite animal. Encourage them to practice the sound their
animal makes. Then, record each child making his animal sound. Ask children to
make the sound, pause, and say, "This is (child's name) and I like (name the animal)."
Children can listen to the tape and guess the animal during each pause.
Science: Decorate a shoebox to look like a zoo cage. Draw zoo animal pictures
on index cards and place them inside the box. One at a time, children will pick a
card and make the sound of that animal. Other children will guess the name of
the animal they heard.
