Engaging more than one sense makes learning more effective. This activity gives
the child tactile memories of the numbers, as well as auditory and visual ones, so
the numbers are mastered more thoroughly.
1. Cut out several sets of numerals from card stock or thin plywood. At least
one set for each child is the ideal number. (Use 1 to 5 or 0 to 9, depending on the
children's age and ability.)
2. Choose a different fabric for each numeral. Cut out matching numerals from
the fabric, and glue them onto the plywood or card stock.
3. Introduce the textured numerals to the children and invite them to trace the
shape of the numeral with their fingers.
4. Ask them to close their eyes and feel the numerals. Encourage them to
describe the way the numerals feel. For example, "Two has bumpy lines on it"
(corduroy) or "Five is really smooth" (satin).
5. Provide scraps of the material to look at and feel. See if they can identify
which numeral was made from which fabric.
