Materials

paint swatches from paint store (two of each shade)

poster board

Velcro

bag or basket (decorated with paint swatches, if desired)

Instructions

l Cut fish shapes out of construction paper. Make 10 for each color used.
l Put a paper clip on the nose of each fish.
l Use dowel rods or sticks, string, and magnets to make fishing poles with
magnets on the end. Make one rod for each color using corresponding string
colors.
l Use markers to make a large bar graph outline on a large sheet of butcher or
colored paper with a column for each color.
What to Do
1. Make a pond by putting all the fish cutouts in a circle on the floor.
2. Gather the children around the pond. Show them how the magnet on the
fishing pole picks up the fish by the paper-clipped nose.
3. Split the group of children into teams for each color and have each team line
up behind a team leader. Explain that they will have three minutes (adjust the
time depending on the children's skills) to catch as many fish of their color as
they can. As they catch a fish, they should place it on the bar graph.
4. Time the first fishing group. When they are done, have the children count how
many fish they put on the graph. Compare the numbers and discuss
correlation of most fish and tallest column.
5. Repeat until all children have a chance to fish.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l When asked to pick out colors that match their color, can the children
successfully choose matching colors?
