Instructions

1. Read "The Three Little Pigs" to the children.
2. One day when you are outdoors, ask a small group of children (no more than
eight) if they want to play a "Little Piggies" game.
3. Explain that all of the children will be piggies and you will be the wolf. Help
the children choose and mark off a "house" (as noted above, the top level of
play equipment is best if there is room for all the children). Tell the children
this is their safe area the wolf cannot touch them there.
4. Ask the children to gather in the "house." Pace around the house, growling
and howling your best wolf howl. Bang on the sides of the house if you can
and growl "Piggies!" menacingly.
5. Say, "Open up, little piggies and let me come in!" Encourage the children to
respond with, "Not by the hair on our chinny chin chins." Repeat this two or
three times to increase the fun. Reach into the house to grab at the children
while you are saying the lines.
6. After saying the lines two or three times, shout, "Run, piggies, run!" At this signal,
the children run out of the house and around the playground as you try
to catch them. (Do Not Catch Any Children!) Simply chase them and growl at
them and pretend you are going to catch them.
7. After a minute or two of this, shout, "Piggies, get back to your house!" Allow
the children to run back to the house. Pace around the house again and
repeat steps 4 to 6. Take your time before you ask them to run again to give
the children a chance to rest.
8. Continue to play until the children seem tired or lose interest. Try to end the
game before they grow tired of it. One good way to end the game is for the
wolf have a change of heart. Beg and plead for the children to let you in
because it is your birthday and you want to have a party, or flop down on a
convenient quilt or blanket and invite the piggies to look at the clouds
together.
More to do
While pacing around the house, improvise lines. After the children respond, "Not
by the hair of my chinny chin chin" to the first request, say, "But I need piggy
bellies (try to touch their stomachs) and I need piggy toes (grab at their feet). I
need piggy knees (tickle their knees) and a little piggy nose (tweak a child's
nose)." This will induce a round of giggles!
