Instructions

1. Assign a flag to each child, and ask the children to sit in a circle with their flags.
2. Begin by talking with the children about flags and what they represent.
3. Identify the countries associated with the flags each child is holding. Show
the children that country on a world map, and mention a few facts about the
country.
4. Name a color. Ask all the children who have that color on their flags to raise it
above their heads.
5. Repeat this with various colors.
6. Continue the activity by naming different shapes, such as circles, rectangles,
squares, and triangles, and having the children wave their flags if they contain
those shapes.
Teacher - to - Teacher Tip
l To make the flags more personal for the children, consider giving each child
an image of a different flag the day before the activity and asking the
children's families to help the children draw copies of the flags on 8" x 10"
sheets of construction paper to bring in the following day. Or else consider
working with the children to create hand-made copies of their flags prior to
doing the activity.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Can the children identify the colors on their flags?
l Can the children identify various shapes on their flags?
l Do the children know the names of the countries associated with their flags?
