Instructions

What to do
1. In a paint cup, mix sand and
tempera paint in a color of
your choice. Add water until
the mixture has the consistency
of oatmeal. Older children
can help mix the ingredients.
2. Have the children paint their
starfish using a teaspoon or
brush.
3. Lay the starfish flat to dry.
More to do
More art: Experiment with other
ingredients when mixing paint,
including salt, oatmeal, cornstarch,
and sawdust. Paint a mural of the beach or sea using various textures of paint. Sand blocks
of wood with different grits of sandpaper, and ask the children to decide which is the most effective.
Sand and water table: Let the children experiment and play with fine sand and seashells, using
sifters and measuring cups.
Science: Hide smooth and rough objects in a touch-and-guess box and have the children identify
them.
