Instructions

* Celebrate Be Kind to Animals Week, the first week in May.
1. Prior to the day of the activity, ask a parent to donate several yards of
colorful cotton material. Cut the material into 16" squares, and then cut
each square diagonally to make a triangular scarf. Make enough so that
each child gets at least one.
2. The day before the activity, remind children to bring in their favorite
stuffed animals the next day.
3. On the day of the activity, have each child bring her stuffed animal to
circle time. Make sure to have a few extra stuffed animals for children
who forget to bring theirs.
4. Each child takes a turn standing up, showing her animal, telling the
animal's name, and explaining what kind of animal it is.
5. Have the children line up. Turn on the music and lead them in a grand
parade. If possible, have them move to another class or show their
parents.
6. Return to circle time and give out the prize scarves to be tied around
each animal's neck.
7. Make sure that each animal wins a prize in a different category (for
example, the largest animal, the biggest ears, the furriest animal,
and so on).
8. If desired, use stickers and ribbons too. Have an adult helper print the
"winning category" on the sticker and present it to the child.
More to do Invite a local animal shelter to bring in a puppy or a kitten and speak about
the proper way to care for a pet.
Contact the American Kennel Club. They have free materials for children on
taking care of a pet dog.
