Instructions
1. Make upper and lowercase alphabet cards. For example, write "A" on one
card and "a" on another, "M" and "m," and so on. The number of cards you
use depends upon the ability of the group. Use safety pins to attach the cards
to the children or punch holes into them and tie string through them so children
can wear them around their necks.
2. Do this activity with a small number of children (6-10). Pin an alphabet card
onto each child.
3. Play music as the children skip around the room. When you stop the music,
each child looks for his letter match. When the children find their "match,"
start the music again. The children with matching letters will skip together.
4. At the end of the song, children can either trade letters to play a new game or
give their letters to other children who have been watching and clapping to
the music.
More to do
This activity lends itself to many variations. Play a matching game using colors
and color words, numbers and number words, or letters and pictures of things
that start with the letter (for example, the letter "c" and a picture of a cat). The
variations are endless, and the children get physical activity too! Another variation
is to change the action from skipping to hopping, marching, and so on.
