wax paper

tacky glue

small pebbles

short twigs

Instructions

* Roll each sock or mitten inside of itself, creating a ball-shaped "bug."
* Place the sock bugs and the stack of containers inside the basket.
What to Do
1. Show the children images of flies and ladybugs. Ask the children to describe
the characteristics of each.
2. Show the children the socks in the basket. Tell the children that the red socks
will represent ladybugs, while the black socks will represent flies.
3. Select a "bug" from the basket.
4. Call out a child's name and invite that child to catch the bug as you toss it into
the air. Challenge the child to say what kind of "bug" it is.
5. After distributing the bugs, invite the children to form a large circle and place
their bugs randomly about the floor.
6. Then select a child to "capture" a bug.
7. Provide the child with a plastic container and give a direction such as,
"Joseph, capture a ladybug," or "Sophie, please capture a fly."
8. Continue the bug-catching activity as the children show their ability to identify
colors and follow directions, covering each bug with a container.
9. After capturing the bugs, ask the children to lift a container and identify the
color of the bug hiding underneath.
Assessment
Consider the following:
* Can the children identify the colors of the socks by name?
* How well do the children work together and take turns identifying the sock
bugs' colors?
