Instructions

1. Beforehand, cut out pictures from magazines or advertisements that represent things the children can do. For example, cut out a picture of a bedspread to represent the child's being able to make her bed. Other examples are pictures of bicycles, jump ropes, and so on.2. Encourage the children to choose pictures that represent some of the things they are able to do.3. Help the children glue their pictures on construction paper to make a collage. Or, they can draw their own pictures using crayons or markers.4. When the children are finished, ask them to dictate why they chose their pictures as you write their words on the paper.5. Arrange and glue the children's pictures on a large sheet of butcher paper to make a paper quilt. If desired, cut the construction paper into squares for easy quilt assembly. Or, simply arrange the paper rectangles on the butcher paper. (Some children may turn their paper, so the papers might not all be same size.) When arranging odd-shaped papers, let some of the butcher paper show through.More to doWork on building the children's self-esteem. Acknowledge what the children are able to do by themselves. And remember to never compare the abilities of the children.
