Materials
empty paper towel rolls
black paper
scissors
tape
pencil
Instructions
1. To prepare, use a permanent marker
to draw a wavy line on a piece of
foam board. Put various insect
stickers and glue insect
cutouts along the line to
make a game board.
2. Put rubber insects (for
markers), a few real bananas,
one or two educational books
on insects and jungle/rainforest animals, a plastic
storage jar to hold rubber insects, two stuffed
jungle animals, and one die on a large table.
3. Make sure to lay out the materials in an
interesting way so the children will want
to come and play.
4. Gather a small group of children next to
the table to participate in a math learning
game. The goal is to encourage interest in
insects found in the rainforest.
5. Let the children choose a rubber insect as a marker.
6. Explain that they will roll the die and move their marker along the game
board to make it to the finish line. This helps the children learn math skills by
counting and seeing the number of dots on the die itself.
7. Encourage the children to use the books on table to assist their
understanding of rainforest animals and insects.
8. Ask questions about rainforest creatures after the children have completed
the game.
