Materials

oak tag for pattern

pencil

scissors

12" x 18" white paper

markers

white glue

Instructions

1. Draw and cut out a basic sailboat pattern on oak tag.
2. Fold 12" x 18" paper in half.
3. Help the children trace the sailboat on a piece of folded paper, with the
fold below the bottom of boat.
4. Have them cut out the double shape, making sure not to cut along
the fold.
5. Encourage them to color and decorate their
sailboats with markers.
6. Have them color the water blue. Ask
them to color their boats and water the
same on the reverse side.
7. Invite them to glue the two flags
together and attach at the point of
the sail.
8. Demonstrate how to fold up
the white area below the
water to form a base for the
boat to stand on.
More to do Invite the children to bring toy boats from home and have a boat show.
Dramatic Play: Put sailor hats in the dress-up area.
Group or Circle Time: Show the children examples of different boats,
including rowboats, pirate ships, cruise boats, freighters, sailboats, and so
on. Discuss what makes ships move.
