Materials
cheese grater
broken crayons
cups
pictures of butterflies
wax paper
iron and ironing board
old towels
Instructions
* Place three toy insects inside each bag.
* Attach several insect stickers to the outside of each bag.
* Stuff a piece of colored tissue paper on top of the toy insects, so that it "puffs"
out the top of the bag (like a birthday gift).
What to Do
1. Invite pairs of children to play this "Birthday Bug Bag" game.
2. Each child selects a birthday gift bag.
3. The first player gives a birthday bag to the other child and says "Happy bug
birthday!"
4. The player receives the bag, says, "Thank you!" and then removes the tissue
paper and removes and identifies each insect.
5. That child then says, "Happy bug birthday!" to the other child and hands her
the other gift bag. This child removes and identifies the bugs in her bag.
6. When the children finish, they mix up the insects, put three inside each bag,
and top it with the tissue paper, so the game is ready for the next players.
Teacher - to - Teacher Tip
* Add more than three insects to each bag or use small gift bags containing
pictures, stickers, or small plastic insects in place of the stuffed/beanbag toys.
Assessment
Consider the following:
* Place an assortment of insects in each bag. Have a child remove each insect
one by one, identify it, describe it, and then display the group of insects in
categories according to color, type, or size.
* Display a birthday card in a box along with an assortment of bugs. Invite the
child to say, "Happy bug birthday!" to each bug as she identifies each insect.
