What to do
1. Ahead of time, cut pictures of athletes and sporting equipment from magazines. Ask older children
to cut the pictures out on their own. Try to represent a wide array of sports and athletes of
all ages and racial backgrounds.
2. Have the children glue the pictures on a giant poster or mural. If the children choose, help them
write their name next to a picture of a favorite sport or athlete.
More to do
Math: Use colorful Venn diagrams or charts to characterize sports as team or individual, indoors
or outdoors, using balls or other equipment. Make a bar graph of the sports that the children play
or enjoy watching.
More art: Design banners or pennants with a sports theme using fabric and wallpaper scraps; ask
families to send in old athletic T-shirts and shorts with team emblems to supplement your scrap
collection.
Movement: Play lively music and do an aerobic routine.
