Materials

1 ice cube tray for each childblack marker5 spoons and 5 colorful cereal bowlsspooning items (cotton balls, colored beads, marbles, buttons)

Instructions

1. Label five compartments on the inside (not the bottom) of ice cube trays (1 to 5) with a black marker. Start at the left hand side of the tray and continue in numerical order from left to right.

2. Set up five spooning stations. At each station, place a spoon and a cereal bowl.

3. Fill each bowl with a spooning item. For example, fill the bowl at station one with cotton balls, colored beads at station two, and so on.

4. Ask the children to rotate through the stations and use the spoons to fill their ice cube trays with the appropriate number of items that corresponds to the numeral written on the ice cube tray.

5. As the children learn more numbers, label the ice cube tray compartments with the numerals 6 to 10. Add five more stations and spooning items such as paper clips, pencil erasers, and small seashells.
