Materials

4" x 6" index cards (one for each child)

markers

CD or tape recording of music

CD or tape recorder

Instructions

l Draw circles on half of the index cards.
l Draw squares on the remaining cards.
What to Do
1. Give each child one shape card. Explain that they will be playing a new kind of
"Musical Chairs." When the music starts, they are to pass cards to their
neighbors and continue passing until the music stops.
2. After the music stops, tell the children to hold the cards in their hands.
3. Say, "If you're holding the card with a square, hold your square in the air!"
Demonstrate what to do. Next, hold up the circle card and say, "If you're
holding the card with a circle, spin your circle 'round and 'round!"
Demonstrate making a circle in the air.
4. Repeat the music and corresponding body movements several times until
children can correctly identify the cards.

Sing "Ring Around the Rosy" with the children. Talk to the children about what
kind of shape a ring is.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Give the children a mixed pile of paper squares and circles. Can they divide
the cards by shape into two piles and name the shapes?
l Can the children identify other objects in the classroom whose shapes are
square or circular?
