empty copy paper box top

tongs

golf ball

black tempera paint

spider stamps

washable black or brown stamp pads

Instructions

* Make a caterpillar head/face on one small paper plate for each rhyming
caterpillar. Glue each picture on to a paper plate.
What to Do
1. Talk with the children about how caterpillars grow. Explain that you are going
to make rhyming caterpillars that will grow by finding rhyming words.
2. Begin the first caterpillar by laying out one caterpillar head.
3. Ask a child to pick out one of the plates with a picture on it and place it next
to the head to start the caterpillar growing.
4. Have the next child choose a plate with a picture of a rhyming word and place
it down to continue to grow the caterpillar.
5. Continue until all the pictures in that group are used.
6. Say the rhyming words together as a group.
7. Begin the next caterpillar in the same way, using a new group of rhyming
words.
8. Again, build a caterpillar by adding only the plates with pictures of rhyming
words.
Assessment
Consider the following:
* Do the children understand the basic concept of rhyme?
* Can the children match rhyming words together?
