Instructions

The goal of this activity is to help children learn to make choices and to
communicate by answering with a word, phrase, or simple sentence.
1. Place construction toys in the sandbox ahead of time.
2. Join a small group of children at the sandbox.
3. Carefully enter into their play scenario by picking up a vehicle and moving it
around in the sand, mimicking some of the activity already present.
4. Observe the children for a short time, and then ask a child if she would like
the backhoe or the digger to help with her construction project.
5. Wait for an answer and then provide the needed piece of equipment upon
request.
6. Observe for a short time again. Approach another child in the same manner.
7. Again provide a choice of equipment. The children will need to provide an
answer before getting the toy.
8. Continue playing with the children, following their lead and engaging in
their play. Expand upon what they are doing and offer them choices.
