What to do

1. Print the poem "Sounds at Night" on a large piece of chart paper.

2. Read the poem to the children. Discuss other sounds we hear at night. Then discuss sounds we hear during the day (for example, children's laughter during play). Could these sounds still be heard at night? Why or why not? (The children are asleep at night.)

3. Read the poem again and ask the children to illustrate something mentioned in the poem, such as a train or rain falling on a roof.

Sounds at Night

I like to go to bed at night
Lying still with no one around.
For if I'm very quiet,
I can hear many a sound.
Maybe the raindrops are falling
On our roof and maple tree.
I think it's typing a letter
Especially for me.
Sometimes I hear a dog bark
Or a train whistle blow.
I listen for cars and trucks
Still going to and fro.
I like the sound of crickets
Chirping on a summer's night.
Then I begin to get sleepy
Feeling the world's just right.
