10 or more pairs of socks

colored duct tape or electrical tape

bold permanent marker

laundry basket

clothesline and clothespins (optional)

* Use the marker to print numbers 1 to 10 on the colored tape. Make two of
each number.
* Cut the numbers apart.
* Lay the pairs of socks flat on the table and attach each pair of numbers to a
pair of socks.
* Place the socks in the laundry basket.
* Display the clothesline and clothespins with the socks, if applicable.
What to Do
1. Invite a small group of children to spill out the basket of socks.
2. Challenge the children to match the socks by their numbers and place them
together in pairs on the floor.
3. Ask the children to name the numbers on the socks and identify their color.
4. Have the children place the pairs of socks in order from 1 to 10.
5. If applicable, invite the children to hang the pairs of socks, in order, along the
clothesline.
Teacher - to - Teacher Tip
* If you do not have an assortment of socks, simply cut pairs of paper socks
from colored construction paper and write a number on each.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
* Give the children one of the numbered pairs of socks and hang the second
sock on a clothesline. Can the children match their socks to the correct
hanging socks?
* Can the children roll the socks into balls, toss them to one another, unroll
them, and identify the numbers on each sock?
