Instructions

1. During circle time, tell the children the story (or read the book) of Snow
White and the Seven Dwarfs.
2. Talk about the dwarfs' personalities, such as Happy, Grumpy, Bashful, and so
on. Discuss what makes each of us feel different emotions, such as happy,
sad, and so on.
3. Ask the children to look at each other and make faces, such as happy, joyful,
sad, and so on.
4. If desired, read the poem "Happy Thought" by Robert Louis Stevenson.
Art: Make "happy-sad thermometers." On pieces of 9" x 12" cardboard (one for
each child), cut a 1" horizontal slit 2" from the top and another one 2" from the
bottom, each cut centered on the page. Give each child a piece of pre-cut
cardboard, a piece of ?" x 17" ribbon, and crayons. Help the children thread the
ribbon through the two slits and staple the ends together in the back. Ask the
children to draw what makes them the happiest at the top of their thermometer,
something that makes them happy in the middle, and something that makes
them sad at the bottom. Ask the children questions such as, "You fell and
scraped your knee." Or, "Grandma just brought you a new toy." Encourage the
children to move the ribbon on their thermometer to "very happy," "happy,"
or "sad."
