Instructions

1. In September, it's helpful to introduce a class pet to the children that
they can handle and examine. Remind them to be careful and respectful
of small animals.
2. Snails are very low maintenance. Keep one in a clear animal container
and add a few lettuce leaves as needed. (Your cafeteria or local grocery
store may be able to donate all you need.)
3. Encourage the children to use magnifying glasses to examine the snail.
4. Read Snail Trail by Ruth Brown to the children.
More to do Art: Cut strips of brown paper about 6" to 8" long and about 1" wide. Show
the children how to curl the paper around a pencil to make snails. Invite
them to glue them on green or brown paper.
Fine Motor: Have children roll playdough into snail shapes. First have them
roll out "snakes," and then coil the snakes into snails. They can also roll pipe
cleaners into snails.
