Instructions

1. Write a simple math equation on each sheet of construction paper, for
example, 2 + 1 = 3. (Write the same equation on each sheet.)
2. Draw the correct number of rectangles under each numeral, for example, two
rectangles under the 2, one under the 1, and three under the numeral 3.
3. Give each child a sheet.
4. Hand out snacks to each child, giving them more than necessary to complete
the problem.
5. Write the equation (with rectangles underneath each numeral) on the easel
board or chalkboard. Read it aloud. Ask the children to repeat it after you.
6. Ask the children to pick up two snacks and place them in the rectangles
under the numeral 2, and one snack under the 1.
7. Draw snacks in your rectangles on the easel board or chalkboard.
8. Add them together with the children and then have them add three snacks
under the 3.
9. Ask the children to move the snacks from the rectangles and repeat the
process on their own.
10. When they are finished, they may eat their snacks.
