Instructions

What to do
1. Ahead of time, cut triangle shapes for sails from construction paper approximately 4" by 4" by
7" (10 cm by 10 cm by 18 cm). Let older children cut out their own triangles.
2. Invite the children to decorate both sides of the sail and the Styrofoam tray with markers,
crayons, or stickers.
3. When they are finished, help them tape
a straw along one edge of their sail.
4. Show the children how to roll some
clay into a ball and press it into the
middle of the tray. Have them stand
the straw up in the clay.
5. Sail the boats in a sink full of water or a
small wading pool.
More to do
Dramatic play: Put the children's boats in a wading pool and hold a regatta; enjoy lemonade and
fish crackers while wearing sunglasses and silly handmade sun hats.
More art: Mold figures from clay to ride in the boat and cut fish shapes out of Styrofoam trays,
then float them in the water.
