Materials

Colored glue or white glue tinted with food dye

Plastic lids

Plastic drinking straws cut into 2" (5 cm) pieces

String or yarn cut into 3" (8 cm) pieces

Instructions

What to do
1. If you are going to dye your own glue, pour a few drops of food coloring in it and stand the
bottle upside down overnight.
2. When you are ready to begin, give each child a plastic lid.
3. Have the children cover the bottom of their lid with a layer of glue, using different colors to create
an interesting design.
4. When the children are finished, have them stand a piece of a drinking straw in the glue near the
edge of the lid. The glue will harden around the straw, leaving an opening for the yarn.
5. Place the lids in a safe place to dry overnight.
6. Once the glue is dry, carefully remove the lid and the straw.
7. Insert a piece of yarn or string into the opening and tie the ends together.
8. Suspend the sun catchers in front of a window.
More to do
More art: Make sun catchers in different sizes and assemble them on a mobile. Arrange small
objects on a piece of dark red or navy blue poster board and place the paper in direct sunlight for
several hours, then remove the objects and see their impression on the faded paper.
