Materials

yarn

scissors (adult only)

tagboard cards with one shape drawn on each

hole punch

markers

two sets of four 12" x 18" flags with one shape marked on each flag

set of cards with these shapes: square, rectangle, circle, and triangle

Instructions

l Make four 12" x 18" flags with one shape marked on each flag.
l Punch two holes in the tops of the tagboard cards. Thread the yarn through
and tie for necklaces. Make one shape on each card.
What to Do
1. Explain to the children that ships use signal flags to tell important information
because they are usually too far away from each other to hear voices. Tell
them they will be playing a signal game using shapes.
2. Give each child a shape necklace and ask him to name the shape on the cards.
3. Divide the children into two groups and position them on opposite sides of the
playground.
4. Give each group one set of the 12" x 18" flags.
5. Ask one group to signal with one of the shape flags. Those children wearing
that shape on their necklaces would then run to the group holding the signal
flag.
6. Next, let the other group signal with a shape flag.
7. Continue until all children have run back and forth several times.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Can the children recognize the shapes on the various flags?
l Can the children connect their shape necklaces to the flags?
