What to do
1. Cut one horse shape per child
from the poster board (the
poster board should yield about
four horses per sheet).
2. Give the children newspaper or
newsprint and have them tear it
into strips approximately 1" by
6" (3 cm by 15 cm).
3. Have the children paint their
horses with black or brown
tempera paint.
4. Encourage the children to glue
the shredded paper to the
mane and tail areas for a realistic
effect.
5. Display the finished horses on
sand-colored paper or on a bulletin board for a Wild West look.
More to do
Dramatic play: Add cowboy hats, bandannas, vests, stick horses, and boots to the dramatic play
area of your room. Add horses, barns, and fences to the block area for a ranch.
Movement: Have galloping relays outdoors.
