Instructions
1. Gather the children around the xylophone.
2. Select a color from the color chart, then play two notes on the xylophone. Play
a continuous rhythm alternating between the two notes.
3. Then sing the color according to the two notes. For example if you play E and
C consecutively sing the words "blue blue" as you alternate playing E and C.
4. Invite the children to sing the tune for "blue" along with you.
5. Tap the highest note on the xylophone signaling children to stop and listen.
6. Select a different color and two different notes on the xylophone.
7. Repeat the activity several times, incorporating various simple melodies as you
sing the colors of the rainbow.
Teacher - to - Teacher Tip
l Use a piano or simple percussion instruments if you do not have a xylophone.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Have the children form a line in front of the xylophone. Listen as each
individual child sings the color melody on her own.
l Allow the children to try the activity on their own. Have a child play a twonote
melody and sing a color word, as you repeat the melody to them.
l If you are using a toy xylophone with colorful keys, invite the children to sing
each color as you move up and down the scale, according to the color of the
keys on the xylophone.
